Why I Don't Accept Insurance

I'm a private-pay practice — which means I don't bill insurance directly. This is a deliberate choice, not a limitation.

When I work outside of insurance, I can:

  • Give you as many sessions as your progress requires — not as many as your plan approves

  • Use approaches like EMDR and Pain Reprocessing Therapy without justifying them to an insurer

  • Keep your diagnosis off your permanent insurance record

  • Protect the confidentiality of what we work on together

The result is therapy shaped around you — not around a billing code.

Note: The privacy and diagnosis benefits above apply when you pay fully out of pocket without submitting a superbill. If you choose to seek out-of-network reimbursement through your insurance, a diagnosis is required — and that diagnosis becomes part of your permanent insurance record, which could affect future coverage, life insurance applications, or employment in certain fields. Your insurance company also retains the right to audit associated records. If complete privacy matters to you, paying fully out of pocket without submitting a superbill keeps everything between us. Both options are available to you — I just want you to understand the trade-off.

That said, many clients use out-of-network benefits to significantly reduce their out-of-pocket cost. Here's how that works.

Using Your Insurance: Out-of-Network Benefits

Even though I'm not in-network with any insurance plan, many PPO and some POS plans include out-of-network mental health benefits — which means your insurance may reimburse a meaningful portion of each session.

Note: If you choose to seek reimbursement, a diagnosis is required on your superbill. That diagnosis becomes part of your permanent insurance record, which could affect future coverage, life insurance applications, or employment in certain fields. Your insurance company also retains the right to audit associated records. If complete privacy matters to you, paying fully out of pocket without submitting a superbill keeps everything between us.

Here's how it works in practice:

  • Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

    • "Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?"

    • "Does my out-of-network coverage apply to telehealth sessions?"

    • "What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much have I met?"

    • "What percentage does the plan reimburse after the deductible?"

    • "Are there any limits on the number of sessions per year?"

    • "How do I submit a superbill, and when can I expect to be reimbursed?"

Tip: Ask for a reference code and the date of the call — this protects you if there's ever a dispute.

  • Individual therapy sessions are charged the morning of your scheduled session.

Intensive sessions require a 50% deposit to hold your spot. The remaining balance is due the morning of your intensive.

    • If you book more than one week before your intensive date, the deposit is due within one week of booking.

    • If you book within one week of your intensive date, the deposit is due at the time of booking.

Credit and debit cards, HSA, and FSA cards are accepted. Payment is processed securely through Jane App.

Alipay via Stripe coming soon — reach out if this is your preferred payment method.

  • After each session, a superbill will be sent via our client portal. A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the diagnostic code, procedure code, session date, and my license information. Everything your insurance needs to process a claim.

  • You submit the superbill directly to your insurance company, either through their app, member portal, or by mail. Many clients receive reimbursement within 2–4 weeks.

What reimbursement typically looks like: If your plan reimburses 70% of out-of-network costs after a deductible, a $200 session could effectively cost you $60 once your deductible is met. Actual reimbursement varies by plan — but it's worth a 10-minute phone call to find out.

A Note on Thrizer

If handling the superbill submission yourself feels like too much, some clients use Thrizer — a service that handles the insurance paperwork on your behalf. Thrizer submits your claims, tracks reimbursements, and in some cases lets you pay only your estimated copay amount upfront. It's a client-paid service — you sign up and manage it directly with them. Frequently Asked Questions

  • I require at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged $100 for 50-minute sessions. If you had an emergency, reach out when you're able — I'm happy to apply the fee as a credit toward a future session or discuss a refund.

For 50-minute sessions, if you haven't arrived or been in touch within 15 minutes of your scheduled start time, I'll consider the session a no-show and step away from the screen. If you're running late, just send me a quick message — as long as we have enough time remaining, we can still meet.

For intensives, a 50% deposit is required to hold your spot. The same 15-minute window applies — if I haven't heard from you by then, I'll consider it a no-show and step away. The deposit is forfeited and the remaining balance is not charged. If you had an emergency, reach out when you're able — I'm happy to discuss options.

  • Intensive sessions can be submitted for out-of-network reimbursement via superbill, but reimbursement is limited. Regardless of whether your intensive is 3 or 6 hours, insurance will only reimburse based on a single therapy session code — meaning you'd be reimbursed for roughly one hour of the total time at most, and only after your deductible is met. I recommend factoring this in when deciding whether to submit a superbill for an intensive.

  • That's a fair question — and one I take seriously. For people who've been managing chronic pain or anxiety for years, the real cost is often the accumulated toll: the missed work, the cancelled plans, the ongoing impact on relationships and quality of life. Many clients find that meaningful progress in a relatively short period of time compares favorably to years of ongoing management. That said, I'll never overpromise on outcomes — we'll talk honestly about what's realistic for your situation during our consultation.
