When Your Patient/Client Has Hit a Wall
You've done good work with your patient. The treatments, the protocols, the care — they've helped. But something is stuck.
Maybe they plateau no matter what you try. Maybe their symptoms improve in your office but return the moment they leave. Maybe fear or stress is running the show.
This is often a nervous system issue — and that's where I come in.
I'm a licensed psychotherapist specializing in chronic pain, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation. I work with the psychological and neurological patterns that keep patients stuck — including neuroplastic pain, central sensitization, and trauma-driven protective responses — so your treatments can actually take hold.
Like many of you, I run a private-pay practice. I understand the value of having time for each patient, building genuine relationships, and offering care that isn't dictated by insurance limitations. I'm looking for collaborative partners who share that philosophy.
Find Your Specialty
-
Including: Licensed Acupuncturists, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Practitioners, East Asian Medicine Practitioners
You might consider a referral when your patient:
Has emotional stagnation or trauma that acupuncture alone isn't resolving
Shows patterns of chronic stress affecting their qi/energy
Has physical symptoms clearly connected to emotional holding
Would benefit from processing specific memories or experiences
Needs support with anxiety, fear, or nervous system regulation
Has pain that involves a strong fear or psychological component
Is stuck despite responding to treatment initially
Our approaches complement each other:
You work with the body's energy systems to restore balance. I work with the nervous system and the mind to help patients release what's stored there. Many patients benefit from both — the acupuncture creating openings, and the psychological work helping those openings integrate and hold.
I deeply respect the wisdom of traditional medicine approaches. I see our work as parallel paths toward the same goal: helping patients come back into balance.
-
Including: Chiropractors (DCs), Osteopathic Physicians doing OMT, Massage Therapists (LMTs), Craniosacral Therapists, Myofascial Release Practitioners
You might consider a referral when your patient:
Gets temporary relief but can't hold their adjustments
Has chronic tension patterns that keep returning
Shows fear or guarding that interferes with treatment
Has pain that seems out of proportion to structural findings
Presents with a strong stress or anxiety component
Has been coming for years without lasting resolution
Would benefit from understanding the mind-body connection to their patterns
What happens when we work together:
When patients learn to recognize and release protective tension patterns — and when we address the nervous system's role in maintaining those patterns — they can finally hold the structural work you're doing. The adjustments last longer. The tissue stays relaxed. The chronic cycle breaks.
I respect your expertise. I'm not here to replace the physical work you do — I'm here to address what's happening upstream that keeps the pattern locked in.
-
Including: Concierge PCPs, Direct Primary Care (DPC) Physicians, Membership-Based Family Medicine, Boutique Medicine Practices
As a fellow private-pay practitioner, I understand why you chose this model — more time with patients, genuine relationships, and care that isn't rushed or dictated by insurance.
You might consider a referral when your patient:
Has chronic pain that hasn't responded to standard approaches
particularly if imaging doesn't fully explain their symptoms (possible neuroplastic pain)
Shows signs of somatization — stress manifesting as physical symptoms
Has anxiety or depression complicating their medical conditions
Needs nervous system support you don't have time to provide
Has a complex history where the psychological and physical are clearly intertwined
Would benefit from trauma processing (EMDR) or pain reprocessing (PRT)
Is looking for evidence-based psychological care without insurance barriers
Why we're natural referral partners:
Your patients already value quality over volume. They're willing to invest in their health. And they trust your recommendations. When you refer to me, they'll receive the same level of personalized, unhurried care they experience with you.
I offer:
Flexible session lengths based on patient needs
Direct communication with you about shared patients
Evidence-based approaches (EMDR, PRT, CBT-I) — not just talk therapy
-
Including:** Functional Medicine Physicians, Integrative Medicine MDs/DOs, Naturopathic Doctors (NDs), Integrative Nurse Practitioners
You might consider a referral when your patient:
Has labs improving but symptoms persisting — a hallmark of neuroplastic or nervous system-driven symptoms
Can't calm down — stuck in chronic sympathetic dominance
Has HPA axis dysregulation that isn't responding to supplements alone
Shows signs of unresolved trauma affecting their health
Has stress-related conditions (IBS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia-like presentations)
Has a history you suspect is driving their physical symptoms
Needs nervous system support beyond what protocols can provide
Keeps "reacting" to supplements or treatments (limbic system hypersensitivity)
What I do:
I specialize in nervous system regulation — helping patients shift out of chronic stress states so their bodies can actually heal. I use EMDR and somatic approaches to address the root patterns, not just manage symptoms.
You're addressing the biochemistry and root-cause physiology. I address the neurology and psychology. Together, we give patients a better chance at full recovery.
The patients who do best are the ones getting support on multiple levels — and the nervous system piece is often the missing link that makes your other interventions finally work.
-
Including: Health Coaches, Wellness Coaches, Nutrition Coaches, Lifestyle Medicine Coaches, Chronic Pain Coaches
You might consider a referral when your client:
Has psychological barriers that coaching can't address (trauma, clinical anxiety, etc.)
Needs clinical-level support for nervous system dysregulation
Has chronic pain with a neuroplastic component
Would benefit from EMDR or trauma processing
Shows patterns that require therapeutic intervention, not just coaching
Is stuck in ways that exceed coaching scope
Scope clarity:
I understand the distinction between coaching and therapy. Sometimes clients need both — the accountability, lifestyle support, and forward momentum that coaching provides AND the deeper processing that therapy offers. When you refer to me, I'll respect your relationship with the client and coordinate with you on their goals.
I can help your clients with:
Processing fear and trauma that blocks their progress
Nervous system regulation skills
Clinical treatment for neuroplastic pain (PRT, EMDR)
Addressing anxiety and stress at a clinical level
-
Including: Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists, Pelvic Health PTs, Women's Health PTs
You might consider a referral when your patient:
Has tension that won't release despite skilled manual work
Guards during internal work or can't tolerate treatment
Has a trauma history that seems connected to their symptoms
Shows emotional responses during treatment sessions
Has symptoms that worsen with stress or emotional triggers
Has been through multiple providers without resolution
Struggles with the vulnerability of pelvic floor work
Has protective patterns that interfere with down-training
What I do:
I'm trauma-informed and work somatically, not just cognitively. I help patients understand their protective patterns, process any underlying trauma, and learn to feel safe in their bodies — so they can actually receive and benefit from your treatment.
Many pelvic floor patients have nervous systems stuck in protection mode. Addressing nervous system patterns often helps tissue work hold more consistently and supports longer-lasting progress.
I understand the mind-body connection in pelvic health and deeply respect the sensitive, skilled work you do. I'm honored to be a collaborative partner in your patients' care.
-
Including: Orthopedic PTs, Sports Medicine PTs, DPT Private Practices, Personal Trainers (rehab-focused), Movement Coaches, Pilates/Yoga Instructors working with chronic pain
You might consider a referral when your patient:
Plateaus despite appropriate treatment progression
Has excessive fear of movement or reinjury (kinesiophobia) that limits participation
Guards, braces, or can't relax during exercises
Has pain that doesn't match objective findings or imaging — possible neuroplastic pain
Flares every time they try to progress — classic boom-bust cycling
Has been in pain far longer than tissue healing would explain
Shows signs of central sensitization or pain catastrophizing
Has a history of trauma or high baseline anxiety
What happens when we work together:
When patients understand their pain as a neuroplastic pattern — not structural damage — and when we reduce the fear driving the cycle, they become much more responsive to movement-based treatment. The guarding decreases. The flare anxiety settles. They can finally trust the process.
What I hear from patients after our work:
"I finally stopped bracing during PT" "I can do my exercises without panicking about flares"
"My trainer says I'm finally making consistent progress"
"I'm not afraid of my body anymore"
Why Providers Choose to Partner With Me
I'm a collaborative partner.
I deeply respect what you do. Your expertise is essential. My role is to address the nervous system patterns that can block your treatments from working — not to replace the valuable care you provide.
I communicate.
With patient consent, I'm happy to coordinate care, share relevant observations, and discuss how our work might support your treatment plan. I believe patients do best when their providers are on the same page.
I understand the private-pay world.
Like you, I run a cash-pay practice. I understand the patients who seek out this model — they value quality, personalization, and results over insurance-dictated care. When you refer to me, your patients will receive the same level of attention they experience with you.
I'm trained in evidence-based approaches specifically for these populations:
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)— targets neuroplastic pain; 66% of chronic back pain patients became pain-free or nearly pain-free in a randomized controlled trial (Ashar et al., JAMA Psychiatry, 2022)
EMDR — recognized by the WHO and APA for trauma-related conditions
CBT-I— first-line treatment for insomnia per the American College of Physicians
Parts Work (Ego State Therapy & IFS) — for understanding and resolving protective patterns
How to Make a Referral
It's simple:
Share my information with your patient/client — the easiest way is to send them my website.
Let them know what to expect — "She's a therapist who specializes in the nervous system piece of chronic pain and stress. She can help with the fear, tension, and psychological patterns that might be getting in the way of your progress."
They reach out directly — Patients can book a free consultation through my online scheduler or reach me by email to discuss their situation and see if we're a good fit.
A script you can use to introduce the referral:
"I'd like to refer you to a therapist I work with who specializes in the nervous system side of chronic pain and stress. She uses evidence-based approaches to help your nervous system calm down and stop amplifying pain — which I think could really help you get more out of the work we're doing together. Would you be open to reaching out to her?"
I'm happy to coordinate care. With the patient's consent, I can communicate with you about their progress and how our work might support your treatment.
